Robert Roman is one of the genuine founding fathers of weightlifting sport science. He recognized early on, in the words of another Soviet sport scientist that: “the technique is the training”. It is not possible to separate the two.
A national level lifter in the early 1950s for Soviet Wings he was national coach in the late 1960s and became a professor of weightlifting at Moscow State University. My brief meeting of Robert Roman at the 1983 Spartakiade is described in the foreward.
“This text is devoted to those who wish to devote themselves to weightlifting and achieve high results.”
The majority of the research carried out in USSR of barbell trajectory was done by Roman and/or was either inspired by or direct offshoots.
“The most essential and distinguishing peculiarities of a weightlifter’s training are shown, with respect, to such characteristics as: a list of barbell exercises utilized and their quantity; the volume of the training loads; the quantity of high intensity work in the various exercises; the resistance and the number of repetitions per set.”
